Questions

How long is a Croatian course?

A group course for adults runs for one semester, about four and a half months, twice a week for 90 minutes: 70 lessons of 45 minutes. Main enrolments are in September and February; we also open a group at other times when enough people sign up.

Do I need to know any Croatian?

No. Almost all our Croatian learners start from zero, at level A1.1. For those who go on, we run groups up to C2, and one-to-one lessons at any level.

Can I learn online?

Yes. Online lessons follow the same programme as lessons in the classroom, usually one-to-one at times that suit you.

Which level does the 70-hour course reach?

A1.1, the basic level the Aliens Act asks for. Jantar’s ministry-verified A1 programme for adults has 140 hours: A1.1 (70 hours) and A1.2 (70 hours). The 70-hour voucher course is the A1.1 part.

Do the teachers speak English?

Lessons are in Croatian from the first day, with pictures, gestures and real situations. Our teachers can explain in English when it helps; most of them also teach English or another language.

I work in Croatia on a work permit. Do I need Croatian?

From June 2027 the amended Aliens Act requires many workers from outside the EU to show Croatian at level A1.1 when they extend their permit or apply for a new one. Read our page on the A1.1 requirement, and ask your employer: a voucher from the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ) pays 30 to 70% of a 70-hour course.
